Horticultural hints for May and June

Lawn care

• Mow lawns once a week, cutting a little lower each time, but avoid scalping (which will only encourage moss and weeds to grow).
• Weeds will be growing fast so be sure to keep them under control with a selective weed killer.
• Energise tired lawns with liquid feed.

Shrubs and plants

• Water and feed plants that need it regularly.
• Prune spring flowering shrubs that have finished flowering.
• Trim Box and other formal shrubs lightly.
• Hoe boarders regularly as now is the time to keep on top of them before the rain comes (forgotten what it looks like!).
• Divide and cut back spring-flowering perennials.
• Be aware we can still have frosts in May, so cover any tender plants on clear nights.
• Dead head and cut down spring flowering bulbs (six weeks after flowering is the official time).
• Top up boarders with bark mulch to retain help essential moisture
• Remember it is your last chance to plant ever green shrubs.
